Winter in the Shelter: How to Stay Warm

Nature is also beautiful when the frost nips at your cheeks. Sleeping in a shelter during winter is a unique experience where the quiet grows deeper and the stars shine brighter. With the right preparation, the cold is part of the adventure.

  • The Foundation: An insulated sleeping mat is your best defense against the cold ground. Unroll your sleeping bag early to let it loft, and try to pick a shelter positioned to catch the pale winter sun.
  • Layer Up: Wool is key. Wear multiple layers and always bring a dry change of clothes. A good beanie and a sleeping bag you can cinch tight will keep the warmth where it belongs.
  • The Fire is the Heart: Keep the flames going with plenty of wood. Splitting your own firewood is a great way to get the blood pumping and the fire roaring.
  • Fuel Your Warmth: Nothing beats the scent of a campfire breakfast. Try a spicy Huevos Rancheros or a cup of steaming hot cocoa before tucking in for the night.
