A little house with a big history

Who were Christian Sehested and Charlotte Amalie? And why did they decide to build a house for poor people in Otterup?

Find out at Otterup Museum's Historical Summer Stories.

The story begins in the 18th century, when local landowner Christian Sehested and his wife Charlotte Amalie arranged for a poorhouse called Frelserens Hospital to be built next to Otterup Church. It opened in 1722 and provided a home for poor, elderly people.

But who were Christian and Charlotte Amalie? What was life like for the nobility? And what was everyday life like for the people who lived in the poorhouse?

At the museum, you'll hear stories about both the rich and the poor, life in the 1700s and some of the people who called the little house their home over the years.

The storytelling session lasts around 30 minutes. Afterwards, you're welcome to explore the museum's other exhibitions. Learn about the Vikings, visit an old-fashioned classroom and see how people lived and worked in days gone by.

See old Otterup in pictures

Start your day with the historical storytelling session at Otterup Museum at 10:00, then head over to the local history archives to see old photographs of Otterup and hear more about the town's past.

Perhaps you'll recognise some of the houses and streets?

There's no guided tour, but the archive staff will be there and are happy to chat about the photographs and the town's history.
